Treatments

People seek out massage for a variety of reasons: to improve mood by relaxing or energising; to address an issue, for example headaches, insomnia, muscle or joint pain; to improve posture and mobility; to maintain flexibility, health and wellbeing…or simply as a one off treat.

Whatever your reason for coming to massage, we will begin every session by agreeing a plan for the treatment. This will include areas of the body to include, appropriate positioning and techniques as well as preferred pressure and pace.

Please see below for more information on the treatments I offer.

Holistic couch /chair based massage therapy

I tailor the massage entirely for your needs and preferences, drawing on Swedish, Thai and deep pressure massage.

Your massage may include a range of the following techniques:

Flowing and gliding strokes soften tissues; encourage the circulation; flush through  excess fluid, hormones and waste
Kneading and squeezing strokes encourage tight muscles and tissues to loosen
Deep pressure focuses on trigger points to release locked in tension; disperses built up lactic acid
Stretching encourages tendons, ligaments and muscles to relax
Mobilisation gently stretches and stimulates joint lubrication
Skin rolling stimulates the skin to encourage suppleness
Bone-tapping stimulates bone cell activity for strength

Indian Head Massage

Called so because it originated in India over 1,000 years ago, this form of massage can be powerfully relaxing and invigorating at the same time. One of my clients calls it “a massage for the brain”!

Focusing on the upper back, shoulders, neck, arms, scalp and face, an Indian Head Massage can have many benefits:

  • Deeply clearing the mind can lower anxiety and improve sleep.

  • Relaxing areas of tension and congestion can bring relief to muscles, joints, sinuses, scalp and skin. It can be particularly helpful if you suffer from headaches and issues caused by posture. Regular treatment can help to improve posture by increasing flexibility and muscle tone.

  • Promoting circulation can enhance brain functioning, improve energy levels and nourish skin and hair.

  • Balancing energy and clearing blocked pathways can rejuvenate mind and body.

It is a seated treatment, can be done over clothing and can involve oils for skin and hair nourishment if desired.

Thai massage

Originating in South East Asia over 2500 yrs ago, this is a powerful treatment which is more interactive in nature, as I use my body weight to move your body into yoga like positions, combining stretches, twists and acupressure. The treatment balances the body’s energy and alignment, releasing tension and restrictions. It is deeply relaxing but also rejuvenating as circulation and flexibility is boosted in each area of the body.

I adapt the techniques and pressure for the individual and their needs, so can be hugely beneficial to all. Studies have shown it to be especially effective in treating headaches, joint stiffness, back pain and general anxiety.

As it involves the whole body, treatments take longer but also last longer in their effect. Many of my clients have reported feeling tangible benefits for weeks afterwards.

Pregnancy Massage

At a time when your body, mind and emotions are adjusting to new challenges, a holistic massage can help you to thrive in your pregnancy. It can also be stimulating and soothing for your baby.

Most of the techniques and variations of holistic massage are still entirely appropriate in pregnancy massage, but side lying and pillows ensure that you are comfortable.
